The Wedding Gift

Bari Poshak

A bari poshak is the bridal poshak a Rajput bride wears for her phere — traditionally sent by the groom's family in the bari, the ceremonial gift of clothes that reaches her home before the wedding. Almost always lal, always four pieces: kanchli, kurti, ghaghra and odhna.

Every wedding rajputi bari poshak below is handcrafted to order in our Jaipur atelier in about 38 days — dabka, zardozi, aari-tari and gota worked by our karigars, numbered and signed, and sent out in the heritage trousseau box. Rajputi bari prices here run ₹20,000 to ₹95,000, stated plainly on every piece — no "DM for price".

Choosing between pieces? Spend where it shows: the odhna sits closest to the bride's face in every photograph, and the ghaghra border is what moves through the phere. A modest kanchli under a magnificent odhna reads far richer than the reverse.

If you are still deciding what a fair price looks like, our poshak price calculator uses the same arithmetic our cutting table does — work, coverage, kali and cloth.

Questions, answered

What is the price of a rajputi bari?

At our atelier, rajputi bari poshaks run ₹20,000 to ₹95,000 depending on the density of handwork, the kali count of the ghaghra and whether the thread carries real silver. Heavily worked or real-silver commissions in the wider market go past ₹2,00,000.

What comes in a bari?

The bari traditionally carries the bridal poshak (the bari poshak), jewellery, sagun sweets and gifts from the groom's family — presented to the bride before the wedding. The poshak is its centrepiece: the set she will wear for the saat phere.

Is a bari poshak the same as a phera poshak?

They are the same garment seen from two sides: 'bari poshak' names where it comes from (the groom's family's gift), 'fero ki poshak' names what it is worn for (the phere). Either way it is a red, fully worked, four-piece Rajputi poshak.

How early should we order a bari poshak?

Eight to ten weeks before the wedding. Made-to-order handwork takes about 38 days in our workshop, and you will want time for fittings after the poshak reaches you.

Can the bride choose her own bari poshak?

Very common now — the bride chooses, the sasural pays, and the ritual presentation stays intact. We regularly coordinate between both families on WhatsApp, keeping the final piece a surprise for whichever side wants it to be one.

How should a bari poshak be packed and presented?

Traditionally the bari is presented openly — the poshak folded with the odhna's worked kor facing up, jewellery beside it, sagun sweets and a silver coin tucked in. Every poshak from our atelier ships in the heritage trousseau box with the odhna displayed on top, so the bari is ready to present the moment it arrives — no re-packing needed.
